NEARBY TOWNS There are many beautiful towns and villages to visit in Hampshire. Below are a few that are local to Flossie’s B&B.
- Alton Market town with medieval origins. General market held in the main High Street every Tuesday morning. Shops, cafes, restaurants, Tourist Information Centre, local museum
- Petersfield Lovely market town with Norman origins. General market every Wednesday & Saturday mornings in The Square. Shops, restaurants & cafes. Local museum, 12th century church, 17th century Physic Garden.
- Alresford Very pretty Georgian town. Many independent shops + gift shops, restaurants, pubs & tea rooms. Watercress capital of the UK.
- City of Winchester Beautiful heritage city with a superb medieval cathedral. Good shopping + plenty of cafes, restaurants & bars. City museum and guided city tours
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
- Watercress Line Steam Railway Stations at Alresford, Ropley, Medstead and Alton. The Watercress Line runs through ten miles of scenic countryside between Alton and Alresford where there is a tea room in keeping with the period of steam trains.
- Jane Austen’s House Museum, Chawton This delightful house is maintained in the style of when Jane Austen lived there, having many mementoes recording her life and literary works. There is also a learning centre on site.
- Gilbert White’s House & The Oates Museum, Selborne Charming 18th century house and lovely garden, home of naturalist Reverend Gilbert White. The museum celebrates the lives and adventures of Captain Lawrence Oates and his uncle, Frank.
- Selborne Pottery, Selborne An exciting range of hand-thrown and decorated domestic stoneware in rich reds, blues and gold.
- Alton Abbey, near Alton An Anglican Benedictine Abbey set in the pretty village of Beech, just outside Alton. Described in The Times as, ‘the best kept secret in the Church of England’.
- Allen Gallery, Alton. A Museum containing one of Southern England’s most outstanding ceramics collections. Special exhibitions gallery, garden & gift shop.
- The Curtis Museum, Alton. One of the finest local history collections in Hampshire, from prehistoric tools to the local history of hops and brewing + the Gallery of Childhood
- Butser Ancient Farm, near Petersfield A recreation of an ancient, working farm with Iron Age farmhouse, granary, forge and enclosures + a selection of traditional farm animals kept during this period.
- National Garden Scheme A nationwide, charitable, open gardens scheme, with 34 beautiful gardens to visit within a 10 mile radius of Flossie’s B&B (over 100 with 25 miles!) Opening times vary from garden to garden, but you will be able to find ones in our area open from February to October. LOCAL PUBS There are a number of pubs which serve excellent food and local ales. All are close to East Tisted and reservations and transport can be arranged if required:
WALKS There are numerous, pleasant places to walk in the area, including ones on our doorstep. Below are a few others.
- The Zig Zag, Selborne. A well-known, steep route, cut through Selborne Hangar by Gilbert White. Accessed from the village (car park at the back of the Selborne Arms pub).
- Old Winchester Hill, near Warnford. A National Nature Reserve with an Iron Age hill fort. Stunning views across the Meon Valley and South Downs Way.
- Queen Elizabeth Country Park, near Petersfield. Hampshire’s biggest country park in the Buster Hill National Nature Reserve. 20 miles of trails. Picnic and BBQ areas are set out amongst the trees and there is an excellent shop and tea rooms.
- Alice Holt Forest, near Farnham. Forestry Commission ancient woodland famous for its oaks. Forest trails, cycle hire, play facilities, gift shop and more.
FURTHER AFIELD
- Portsmouth Historic Dockyard 800 years of Naval history. Main attractions are the Mary Rose Museum, HMS Warrior, Royal Naval Museum, Actions Stations, HMS Victory Walkup and Harbour Tours.
- Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth. Built to commemorate the Millennium. An elegant, 170 metre high structure. Fabulous views across the Harbour and the Solent. Features Europe’s largest glass floor which can be walked on, giving a dizzying view down through the structure of the tower. Cafe/bar.
- Isle of Wight Just off of the Hampshire coast. Enjoy a day trip to this pretty isle with 60 miles of unspoilt scenery + many attractions. The ferry terminals at Portsmouth are 20 miles drive from Flossie’s B&B. Crossings via Wightlink Ferries. Car ferry: Portsmouth-Fishbourne - 40 minute crossing. Foot passengers: Portsmouth-Ryde - 20 minute crossing (by ‘FastCa
t’).
RAILWAY STATIONS (Mainline)
Alton & Petersfield: both stations operate direct trains to London (Waterloo) and Portsmouth on the South Coast.
